Monthly Book of Choice
The only way to become a better reader is to read more. Each month, you will choose a new book to read on your own. Books can be any genre (fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, drama, comedy, etc) as long as they are grade-appropriate and approximately 100 pages or more. No children’s books! (also, books you read in jr. high or that were on the jr. high reading list will not be accepted either.) Some graphic novels are ok, though; just ask me first to make sure.
Each month, you will read a book and then complete a “one-pager” for the book you read. Each month, the “one-pager” will be different. In addition to the “one-pager,” you may be asked to discuss the book with me. The teacher discussion won’t happen every month and you will not know in advance which month you will be asked to discuss, so be prepared! Your “one-pagers” will be checked and recorded as a quiz grade each month. This could be a great way to help your grade—or hurt it. I hope it will help!

We will go to the library as a class at the beginning of each month. You can check out books from the library, borrow books from Mrs. Niemeyer’s classroom library, or read books that you have purchased on your own (paper books or electronic books). You should bring your book to class with you each day until you have finished it and the “one-pager.” If you finish work early in class, you will be allowed to read your book which can save you time!
If you are unsure of what books you should read, the librarians can help you find a book that suits your interests. You can also check out this website to check out some book trailers and decide if you might like a book before checking it out. After the first month or two, you might want to read some of the books your classmates have read. Ask them for suggestions or recommendations.

I hope you will learn a lot from this and read some books for FUN and not just because your teacher said so!
